Marseille, gateway to Provence, is France’s largest port and second largest city, with a vast history stretching back more than 2,000 years to its foundation by the Greeks in the 6th century BC. It has a spectacular setting between dramatic limestone hills and the Mediterranean, and the once-industrial streets now feature stylish shops and cutting-edge art galleries. Most cruisers make a beeline for Le Vieux Port, a buzzing, picturesque harbor lined with boutiques, restaurants and cafes. This district attracts an eclectic crowd, from local fishermen to millionaires venturing ashore from James Bond-style mega-yachts. All gather to soak up Le Vieux Port’s charming atmosphere, browse its bustling markets and tuck into a bowl of Marseille’s classic signature dish, bouillabaisse (a rich fish stew).

Portofino is a famous village of the Ligure riviera. It stands in a protected bay in the wide Tigullio Gulf. With its narrow and coloured houses, leaning against one another, it looks like a simple fishermen village. Its numerous small streets all lead to the now world famous small pebbled square. Here nature and worldliness come together : Portofino, sanctuary of the VIPS, crossroads of famous people, and Portofino of the Protected Park and Natural Area, with its footpaths, its Mediterranean maquis, its deep waters. A very special seamen village unites with the untouched nature.

To reach Naples’ fascinating old town, go straight past Castel Nuovo and then over the Piazza Municipio. The cities archaeological museum majors on Pompeii and Herculaneum, the two extraordinary sites that draw most first-time visitors to Naples. The city is also a convenient base for tours to the nearby plush cliff-top resort of Sorrento and the even luxurious islands of Capri and Ischia.

The backdrop of Mount Etna, or what the locals call The Great Volcano, is a testament of Sicilian resilience. Originally a Greek colony, Catania has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over.
