General Information about Lebanon

Orientation:

Loubnan denotes Lebanon’s mountains.  it derives from the Phoenician and stands for “white mountain”.  Parts of Lebanon mountain remain snow-covered all year.

Lebanon does utilize daylight saving time.

Lebanon Standard Time – is abbreviated as EET (Eastern European Time)
Lebanon Daylight Saving Time – is abbreviated as EEST (Eastern European Summer Time)

Lebanon is GMT/UTC + 2h during Standard Time
Lebanon is GMT/UTC + 3h during Daylight Saving Time

Temperature:

On the Lebanese coast, where Beirut and other cities such as Tripoli and Tyre are found, the climate is typically Mediterranean. Winters are very mild, with average temperatures in January around 14 °C (57 °F), but they are also rainy, with particularly abundant rains in December and January. Summers, from June to September, are constantly sunny, hot and muggy but tempered by sea breezes. In summer, average highs are around 28/30 °C (82/86 °F).

Visas and Passports

Two Options:

  • Obtain Visa at Beirut International Airport or
  • Obtain Visa through a Lebanese Embassy.

Visit and tourist visas to Lebanon are either obtained upon arrival at Beirut International Airport or at the Embassy, provided the passports do not bear any Israeli visa or seal.

Language:

Although Arabic is the official language in Lebanon, however both English and French are widely spoken.

The legacy of France’s colonial rule allowed Lebanese to speak French. The younger generation though tend to speak English.

Tipping:

it is custom to tip at restaurants at an average of 10% rounded up.

Any other areas although is not custom however if you tip would be at travelers discretion.

Photography:

Taking photos of military or any governmental buildings is considered as illegal.

Electricity:

In Lebanon the standard voltage is 220 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. You can use your electric appliances in Lebanon, if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 – 240 V (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). Manufacturers take these small deviations into account. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100 V – 127 V (as is in the US, Canada and most South American countries), you need a voltage converter in Lebanon. You can also consider a combined power plug adapter/voltage converter.

Health:

Before flying into Lebanon it is important to be updated regarding the latest regulations. Entry requirements can change with little or no notice.

Clothing:

Lebanon’s climate is a Mediterranean one. Refer to temperature for more information.  Light clothing is advisable to help you withstand the heat.  Don’t wear anything too short, that doesn’t happen in Lebanon.

Especially where ladies are concerned,  plunging necklines, bare arms and shoulders as well as shorts revealing legs, must be avoided. 

Visiting religious sites both men and women should be dressed appropriately.

On the beach, swimsuits are accepted,  however must be decent.  Avoid bikinis which are too small . If hiking then a good pair of walking shoes is recommended.
